Tokyo Cafes: Arise Coffee Entangle

On a sunny weekend, youll spy a small crowd hovering outside a white-box house across from the Kiyosumi Park and Fukagawa Library. It might be full even if the weather isn’t cooperating! You’re looking at ARiSE Entangle, the younger sibling to the first ARiSE just down a few blocks, which set up shop in  Kiyosumi years ago. Instead of making the typical choice to open in popular places such as Shibuya, Ginza, or Shimokitazawa, ARiSE’s response to the steadily growing fame has been to serve more people in the neighbourhood.

When you enter, you’ll see an eclectic mix of skateboards, local crafts, home-made furniture, action figures, and a rhino haning on the wall. Fortunately, it still has plenty of tables and seats if you are planning to sit down for a chat or to get some work done. There are at least two outlets in one wall.

They typically serve 6-7 roasts at a time, the flavours written in Japanese and the origin of the bean written in English. The flavours include red wine (赤ワイン風), standard (定番), fruity (フル-テい), refreshing acidity* (明るい酸い味), and liqueur (リキュ-ルのよる). *Note that some are general translations.

I came with a friend and we ordered the Dominica standard blend, and the Rwandan brew, which we took black. Both are mild, and the latter is quite acidic. They only serve drip coffee.

They also serve a rotating selection of cakes, tarts, and sandwiches. In the summer, there was a lovely cheesecake. My latest visit there were hot dogs and tarts.

On the weekdays, it usually has a few customers at a time who stay a while to work, catch up, or chat with the guys at the bar. They also have a good stash of magazines, so be sure to flip through them in the back shelf for restaurant and cafe ideas!

When you’re done, hop across the street to check out the Meiji architecture of the Fukagawa Library.
